A few deaths, plots of rebellion, trips lớn hidden colonies, and countless tense encounters later, và the stage is finally set: Rick is ready to lớn rumble against Negan & the Saviors. The problem is that not many other key players are on the same page just yet.

Bạn đang xem: The walking dead recap: turn that frown upside down

When last we saw Rick, he was looking a lot closer to lớn his former self & assembling his crew on the Hilltop doorstep lớn make the first move in reclaiming their freedom: enlisting the aide of other colonies. But before we get into that, there’s a small piece of business with Father Gabriel.

We pick up right after that post-credits scene with the mystery boatman (or boatwoman) in boots, who spies Gabriel standing on watch duty. If you need a refresher, here it is:

The good priest is still there, but he soon makes off with a crate full of food và weapons and leaves Alexandria. Yup. The shift is so stark that it doesn’t make all that much sense on the surface. Last we saw, he was the kind of person khổng lồ leave Spencer in a oto for speaking ill of Rick — the kind of person to try khổng lồ instill hope in everyone as Negan ransacked their homes. But his physicality has changed: Gabriel walks calmly khổng lồ the food pantry before hustling lớn lift as much as he can out of there. He even leaves his Bible on the ground, perhaps a metaphorical shedding of his holy order — or perhaps a purposeful breadcrumb left behind for Rick?

Was his whole change of heart just a ruse? Has he always been devious? Did he see whoever it was skulking around beyond the wall? If so, vị they know each other somehow?

Rick is scratching his head over questions of his own about Hilltop. After triumphantly signaling to his crew that he’s finally (finally!) ready lớn take action, Gregory refuses to help, but he does at least offer his complacency. In Gregory’s defense, that was a dead end from the beginning. Maggie & Sasha should have realized he wouldn’t be on board with their plans after he tried handing them over khổng lồ the Saviors. Why ask him at all, for that matter, when he’s so shady? Jesus & the others were so keen on usurping him as leader of Hilltop. They should’ve been more forceful.

However, others in the colony vày want khổng lồ help, thanks to Enid, who wrangles together people outside the mansion. Maybe they can overwhelm the Saviors if they have the forces. Forces. Hmm. Well, Ezekiel has forces. Jesus declares it’s time lớn meet the King, and because he happens lớn have a long-range walkie he lifted from one of Negan’s men, he knows when is the right window to lớn seek an audience. It’s about time, but already this immediate shift in pacing feels at odds with the slog that was the first half of the season: Ezekiel was barely in the first batch of episodes, & now, minutes into the show’s return, we’re already there.

Richard và another guard meet Rick’s group at an empty parking lot to form size them up, và Jesus is their liaison. (Side note: Jesus earned some points for that display of parkour at Hilltop, but his dialogue could use some work.) The trip serves another purpose by reuniting them with Morgan, who tells them about Carol.

She’s still off on her own, but I’m already predicting a moment of self-realization that brings her out of this funk and changes the tide in the war ahead. That was Rick’s whole thing in the first half of the season, & Morgan admits here that he, too, underwent a similar transformation by killing a man because he had no other choice. Another likelihood is that Carol is the one to sway Ezekiel into making moves: As they soon learn, the King is still very much afraid to lớn launch his people into a battle that may not be a necessity.

Rick makes a good case, bolstered by Richard’s interruption, but Morgan proves lớn be a barrier when he suggests there’s another way to solve the problem. And here I thought he knew when you have to kill và when you don’t. Before they leave, Rick tells a childhood story about a young girl who’s the only one in her kingdom to dig up a treacherous “rock in the road” (look, it’s the episode title!), và it proves to be a thử nghiệm from the king, who bestows her with well-deserved riches.

As Ezekiel ponders this tale, his prot&#x
E9;g&#x
E9; Benjamin journeys into the woods lớn find Carol and make sure she’s safe và doing well. She is, & she’s still committed to her solitary life, but Benjamin sparks something in her when he says, “There aren’t that many people left. We have khổng lồ help each other.” He heads back to the Kingdom lớn speak with Ezekiel and urge him lớn join Rick’s cause. Benjamin argues that the Alexandrians will risk it all regardless of their decision: If they lose, it’ll be partly on the Kingdom, and if they win, the Kingdom will have done nothing to lớn help.

Ezekiel still isn’t on board because, as he explains the morning after, the Kingdom was formed at a cost — men & women lost their limbs and others lost their lives in fighting a battle against the walkers when there was no need. He does, however, offer Daryl asylum as the Saviors don’t stray into their walls (for now), a suggestion Rick forces Daryl to lớn take.

Daryl seems pissed off, almost betrayed, since he only just freed himself from Negan. But Rick wants someone on the inside lớn try to convince Ezekiel to come around. The move also seems lượt thích a storytelling ploy lớn rearrange the characters’ locations. Now Daryl is closer to Carol, which means he’ll probably reawaken her warrior spirit and lead her lớn sway Ezekiel.

Joining Ezekiel in the group of people making bad choices for themselves is Rosita, who slings this insult khổng lồ Sasha as they depart the Kingdom: “What the hell you telling me for? We both had sex with the same dead guy. It don’t make us friends.” On one hand, they haven’t spent a lot of time together since Abraham’s death, so it makes sense for long-festering resentments khổng lồ boil over. But then again, are we really going to lớn carve out time to lớn address this pretty squashable personal beef when there are such higher stakes at play? I thought Rosita, even in this psychological transmogrification, was better than that.

As the group drives home, Negan’s voice is heard on the walkie mourning the death of Fat Joey. (“Skinny Joey becomes Joey.”) Their path is blocked when they come across one of the Saviors’ traps: A line of cars cuts off the highway, while further down is a steel wire covered with explosives. The plan is khổng lồ move the cars so as not lớn leave any sign of their presence and take the explosives for ammunition.

Things change when they hear Negan commanding his forces to lớn go to lớn Alexandria & look for Daryl as a herd of walkers emerges from around the bend. Now, they want khổng lồ cap the herd with the cars to lớn potentially use against Negan later. They succeed in acquiring the bombs, but when the herd encroaches, Rick and Michonne hot-wire the vehicles attached lớn the wire and drive them straight through the dead.

Sasha & Jesus head for Hilltop on foot, & the rest make it back to Alexandria in time to lớn welcome Simon and his gang. They tìm kiếm the town for signs of Daryl, but they only find the food supply depleted, something that also surprises Rick. After the Saviors impart a final warning about what will happen if they ever find Daryl in their company, the group reconvenes & learns what Gabriel did.

Rick may be the only one with faith in the priest, a faith that may be rewarded when he searches for clues và finds a message scrawled in a notebook: “BOAT.” Wondering how Gabriel would have known of Rick và Aaron’s secret mission across those treacherous wailing waters, the group sets out for the site. Aaron has a light squabble with Eric, who fears the consequences of Rick’s plan to lớn combat the Saviors and Aaron’s blind eagerness to join.

Regrouping near the boat, Rick searches for clues & finds a trail of footprints that lead the group khổng lồ an encampment covered in shrubbery. Though it all seems abandoned, they are quickly overwhelmed by a strange group of people. One of them, a woman with long braid handling a gun, is wearing a familiar hood and cloth over her face that may have also been worn by the mysterious figure spying on Rick from the woods.

The group closes in, but Rick is the only one who’s calm about this ambush. In fact, he locks eyes on something (or someone) và smiles. This seems like the new group of survivors showrunner Scott M. Gimple teased, & perhaps its leader is someone from Rick’s past.

The Walking Dead is trying khổng lồ repair itself after the bad will it gained since the deaths of Abraham và Glenn. I still think what we’ve seen from season 7 so far could have been condensed, but it’ll take a little more to get back khổng lồ where it once was. Let’s hope, too, that Ezekiel and his CGI tiger have more to do in the second half.

Rick và his friends have PLANS, y’all. AMC
Emily St. James was a senior correspondent for mailinhschool.edu.vn, covering American identities. Before she joined mailinhschool.edu.vn in 2014, she was the first TV editor of the A.V. Club.
I don’t know if you’ve heard, but The Walking Dead is in trouble. Ratings are down, the show’s storytelling has seen better days, and the Negan arc has drawn no shortage of critical jeers (including from me).

And yet ... The show is still one of the biggest scripted series on television. Even with ratings slumping as much as they have, there are lots và lots and lots of people who watch The Walking Dead week lớn week, so there’s no real incentive lớn right the ship.

But even if there were, The Walking Dead is seven years old. It’s ridiculously hard to change course with a series that old, because audiences have largely seen everything it has in its bag of tricks (not to mention that this show in particular is rather faithful to lớn a preexisting series of comics).

So the folks behind The Walking Dead have done what you’re supposed to bởi in this situation: They’ve teased that this latest batch of episodes (the second half of season seven) will return to lớn what made the show so beloved in the first place. The storytelling will be tighter & less grim. The characters will move forward. We’ll get back khổng lồ the “Rick against the world” tone of the early seasons.

All of the above is true in the midseason premiere, so far as it goes. But at the same time, “Rock in the Road” is further evidence that The Walking Dead might have permanently strayed from its most productive path.

The story might be moving forward, but it’s still sluggishly paced

The biggest problem with the first half of The Walking Dead’s seventh season was how mired it became in nothingness. It was a slog, with no momentum, where the characters simply lived underneath Negan’s iron fist. It wasn’t just boring; it was actively unsatisfying.

The over of the first half-season featured Rick & company deciding it was time to take the fight khổng lồ Negan, having finally had enough. In and of itself, this move gives The Walking Dead a touch of the momentum it’s lacked for quite a while now. The characters have a quest, and with that quest comes a feeling of urgency.

Michonne is ready khổng lồ go. AMC Consider the sequence that unexpectedly turns out to be the episode’s most compelling one. Rick và his Alexandria-bound pals discover a blocked-off highway on-ramp, which they surmise must lead to one of the Saviors’ facilities. While exploring, they discover a trap laid by the Saviors & laced with explosives. They want the explosives, so they carefully dismantle it, even as a gigantic herd of zombies bears down on them.

At first, the sequence feels bogged down by many of the show’s worst tendencies — especially when it seems khổng lồ involve little more than the crew moving a bunch of parked cars like post-apocalyptic valets. But the steady accumulation of plot points gives it a slow-building tension that resolves in gleeful zombie carnage: Rick và Michonne driving two cars in tandem, with a cable strung between the vehicles decapitating and bisecting every zombie it bloodily roars through.

If nothing else, it proves The Walking Dead still knows how khổng lồ kill zombies with style. But how many times have we seen Rick and the gang take on a seemingly unstoppable foe? The show’s larger problems are macro problems, problems with the very way the show is constructed and just how repetitive it’s become. The audience isn’t turned off by Negan because he’s a horrible character (though he is that); the audience is turned off because we’ve seen characters like him before.

Season seven’s other big story — in which Alexandria, Hilltop, và the Kingdom form a fitful alliance to take down Negan (King Ezekiel isn’t in yet, but you know he will be) — is slightly better, if only because we haven’t seen a million other versions of it in past seasons. But functionally, it’s played out as an endless series of variations on “the gang is separated, then finds each other again” storyline that already we’ve seen too many times. The same applies to the army of folks who surround Rick và his friends at episode’s end, who are presumably the heavily armed, all-woman colony introduced earlier in the season.

Rather than really delving into, say, the Kingdom’s reluctance to take on Negan, or its relative affluence compared with the other communities, The Walking Dead is mostly interested in the Kingdom as a series of weirdo medieval affectations và a place for assorted supporting characters to hang out until the story needs them again.

The Walking Dead is struggling on an episodic level too

While The Walking Dead’s problems are more noticeable on the macro level, they’re not limited khổng lồ it.

It used lớn be that you could explain, more or less, what any given episode of The Walking Dead was about, what smaller goal the characters were trying lớn accomplish, even if it was something stupid like trying lớn get a zombie out of a well. But the more the series has fallen under Negan’s sway, the less true that’s become.

King Ezekiel has had enough of these goofballs. AMC
What, precisely, are the characters trying to lớn accomplish in “Rock in the Road” beyond what the show is trying lớn accomplish? The show needs Rick to lớn meet King Ezekiel, but it also needs King Ezekiel lớn be reticent lớn take on the Saviors. So the closest thing Rick has to lớn a goal — convince King Ezekiel khổng lồ join his cause — is quickly thwarted by the show itself, simply because it needs khổng lồ extend this story for a few more weeks.

This is why the highway sequence is the most successful part of the episode. The characters have an easily understandable goal, and they work to achieve it against mounting odds. These are the most basic tenets of storytelling, but The Walking Dead often seems to have forgotten all about them, in favor of world building. (In “Rock in the Road,” for instance, Gabriel pretty much just drives off — seemingly having stolen most of Alexandria’s food — because the show needs the characters khổng lồ follow him và meet a new group of characters.)

World building, of course, is well và good, and TV shows need to indulge in some of it. But it can be hard to resist the điện thoại tư vấn of simply exploring new corners of a show’s world at the expense of actually telling a story. This is especially true of older shows, which struggle khổng lồ find new stories khổng lồ tell, and, well, that sounds lượt thích The Walking Dead, right?

When The Walking Dead was at its best — back in the second half of season four và the first half of season one — it largely eschewed a larger, macro story in favor of a bunch of more compelling micro stories. It was ruthless with its characters và its plot momentum, and it didn’t much worry about overall build. Instead, it concentrated on producing satisfying standalone tales that slowly added up to something more.

That’s hard to do with a Big Bad lượt thích Negan getting in the way, and even in its stronger hours, season seven is a constant reminder of why that’s the case.
