Often referred to as “fish farming”, Aquaculture is broadly defined as the culture of any living aquatic resource. Fish, crustaceans, molluscs, plants, algae, và even useful bacteria, can be produced in aquaculture facilities. In North Carolina, we have a diverse industry that focus’ on the following species: Fish: Striped Bass (and hybrid striped bass), Tilapia, Catfish and Trout (NC is a đứng top producer of trout); Crustaceans: crayfish & Blue Crabs; và Molluscs: oysters và clams.
These organisms may be raised in the more traditional “open systems” such as ponds và leased coastal waters, or in more “intensive systems” especially the indoor tank facilities referred to as “recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS)”. Aquaculture is a complex and dynamic industry & North Carolina is part of this global powerhouse of seafood production. The materials contained in this website are intended to lớn provide useful, research based, information with a focus to lớn assist the development of the NC industry. NC State University & N.C. A&T State University work in tandem, along with federal, state & local governments, to size a strategic partnership called N.C. Cooperative Extension, which staffs local offices in all 100 counties và with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
